Harnessing Advanced Technology to Improve Dental Implants & Streamline the Patient Experience

Charleston’s Kotary Robotic Dental Implant Center provides innovative dental services and treatments offered nowhere else in South Carolina.

Its namesake Dr. Eddie Kotary, practicing dentistry for 23 years, specializes in robotic-assisted implant placement and restoration. His practice utilizes the latest advancements in treatment and technology, including Yomi® Robotic Dental Implant technology, the country’s first robotically-assisted dental surgical system approved by the FDA.

“I bring a different type of dentistry to the area,” stated Dr. Kotary. “I think my slant on dentistry is minimally invasive implant placement, restoration, and in general, my whole approach to oral surgery is a patient-centered, minimally invasive approach, where I’m using a patient’s biologics if I can.”

He emphasized that what sets his practice apart is the concierge service. “I only see one person at a time.” Dr. Kotary even does house calls and will meet someone where they live in the community. He added, “I want it to be a real personable experience. Not a mill.”

The Yomi Advantage: Robotic Implant Technology Leads To Better Patient Outcomes

Yomi Robotic Dental Implant surgery allows Dr. Kotary to use a minimally-invasive flapless technique for implant restorations. “Often, I don’t even have to use a scalpel or stitches,” he remarked. “There’s no bleeding.” Dr. Kotary, who has a mastership in implant restorations from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, can design these implants from the crown down rather than the implant up.

“So I know what the crown’s going to look like and feel like in a patient’s mouth before I ever do the implant,” he explained. “And then the robot helps me put the implant exactly where I need it to be based on the person’s bone and based on where that crown needs to go. It’s a much more aesthetic result, and you get faster healing because of the minimally invasive part, and it’s just a better outcome for the patient.”

Dr. Kotary has been treating patients with Yomi for three years. He was only the fourth person in the country to use the technology and is currently the only person utilizing it in South Carolina.

Dr. Kotary is the only dentist performing a new type of implant called a subperiosteal implant nationally. Ideal for patients with very little structural bone, the subperiosteal implant begins with the generation of a 3-D printed scan of the patient’s anatomy. The 3-D design is patient-specific and allows them to put teeth on the implant immediately.

“They are called teeth in a day,” noted Dr. Kotary. “Someone comes in, they have no teeth, and then they leave with a permanently attached prosthesis to those implants. So they are actually getting teeth, where they didn’t have any teeth.”

While the subperiosteal implant does not require Yomi’s help, Dr. Kotary maintained that robotic-assisted implants are the future. “It’s a paradigm shift in implant placement, in implant dentistry,” he said. The transition involves moving from removable fixtures such as dentures and bridges to non-removable, permanently-affixed teeth.

Yomi-assisted implant surgery also means a patient no longer relies on a surgeon to freehand or order an expensive surgical guide, which doesn’t allow same-day treatment. “This allows me to do same day, real-time treatment, without having to order a guide… I can put my implant in without having to do a gross dissection of that tissue, without having to pull the tissue back to see the bone,” he asserted. “I know where the bone is because the robot’s telling me where the bone is.”

He said that most people are candidates for a dental implant, except for people with osteoporosis or individuals undergoing cancer treatments, which prohibits healing. Dr. Kotary guarantees his dental implants for life because they are made from the highest quality materials by premier brands.

Dr. Kotary, who also trains dentists learning to use Yomi, summarized the robotic implant approach this way: “It just adds a layer of precision and sophistication that we haven’t seen in dentistry. It’s a static robot; it doesn’t do anything on its own. It doesn’t move. It just gives me visual, haptic, and audial feedback to know exactly where I’m going.”
